Ophthalmology Guest of Honor: Timothy McCulley, MD

  • Timothy McCulley, MD, is professor and chair of the Ruiz Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Science at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston. He also holds the Richard S. Ruiz, M.D. Distinguished University Chair.
  • Dr. McCulley joined UTHealth Houston from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where he held the Earl D. Kidwell, Jr., M.D. Professorship in Ophthalmology and served as vice chair for clinical strategic planning at the Wilmer Eye Institute. He also served as the director of the Division of Oculoplastic Surgery, director of the Division of Neuro-Ophthalmology, and director of the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ASOPRS) ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive fellowship program.
  • After receiving his medical degree from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, Dr. McCulley completed a combined medical and surgical internship at the University of Hawaii and ophthalmology residency at Stanford University. He is duel fellowship trained in both oculoplastic surgery and neuro-ophthalmology. He completed a fellowship in neuro-ophthalmology at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, and an ASOPRS accredited oculoplastic fellowship at the Cincinnati Eye Institute. He previously served on the faculty at Stanford University School of Medicine and the University of California San Francisco. He joined the Wilmer faculty in 2011 and spent two years as the director of oculoplastic surgery at Wilmer’s hospital affiliate in Saudi Arabia, King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital.In addition to serving as the primary preceptor for an ASOPRS accredited oculoplastic fellowship, Dr. McCulley’s educational work includes supervising medical students, residents, and fellows in outpatient, consult, surgical, and research environments. He has authored over 100 peer-reviewed research articles, served as chief or section editor for four books and contributed more than 25 additional book chapters. Dr. McCulley also has been a part of a number of funded basic science projects and clinical trials. His specialties include cosmetic and reconstructive surgery of the eyelids, orbit and tear drainage system, and neuro-ophthalmology. Specific interests include neoplasm of the orbit and eyelids, Graves disease, blepharoptosis, and disorders of the optic nerve.

Ophthalmology Featured Speaker: Robert Feder, MD

  • Dr. Feder has been performing refractive surgery since 1991, and he also performs cornea transplant and cataract surgery. He is certified to use presbyopia-correcting implants in patients undergoing cataract surgery.
  • After completing his ophthalmology residency at Washington University in St. Louis, where he graduated with distinction, Dr. Feder completed additional training in medical and surgical care of the cornea at University of Iowa.
  • Dr. Feder is board-certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and now serves as an examiner for the board. In addition to active participation in the American Academy of Ophthalmology, he also chairs the Preferred Practice Patterns Committee for all the specialties in ophthalmology. He has served on the Basic Clinical and Science Curriculum Committee for refractive surgery, cataract surgery and corneal disease. He is a member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, the Cornea Society, the Paton Society, the Ocular Microbiology Immunology Group, and the Chicago Ophthalmological Society. Dr. Feder founded and runs the Chicago Cornea Association.
  • Dr. Feder has co-authored two books on LASIK surgery, the first of which was published by the American Academy of Ophthalmology. The second book, The LASIK Handbook: A Case-Based Approach, presents Dr. Feder’s patient-focused approach to LASIK surgery. He has written extensively for professional journals and lectures frequently at symposia on corneal disease and refractive surgery.
  • Dr. Feder has twice received the Best Teacher of the Year Award from the Chicago Curriculum in Ophthalmology and has consistently been recognized as an outstanding physician by “America’s Top Doctors,” “Best Doctors in America” and Chicago Magazine for over 15 years.

Otolaryngology Featured Speaker: Travis Tollefson, MD, MPH

  • Dr. Tollefson is Professor and Director of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the University of California Davis, where he specializes in cleft and pediatric craniofacial care, facial reconstruction and facial trauma care. His interest in the emerging field of Global Surgery and improving surgical access in low-resource countries led him to complete an MPH at the Harvard School of Public Health. His current research focuses on clinical outcomes of patients with cleft lip-palate, facial trauma education in Africa, patterns of mandible fracture care and patient reported outcomes in facial paralysis surgeries.

  • Maintenance of Certification:  Successful completion of this CME activity, which includes participation in the evaluation component, enables the participant to earn their required annual part II self-assessment credit in the American Board of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery’s and the American Board of Ophthalmology’s Continuing Certification program (formerly known as MOC).
